10 Common English Mistakes Bengali Speakers Make — And How to Fix Them

বাংলাভাষীরা ইংরেজিতে যে ১০টি ভুল সবচেয়ে বেশি করে — এবং কীভাবে সেগুলো চিরতরে ঠিক করবে।

কেন আমরা ভুল করি? — The Root Cause

Most English mistakes by Bengali speakers are not random — they follow predictable patterns. That's actually good news: fix the pattern, fix dozens of errors at once.

The main reason: we translate Bengali grammar into English. Bengali and English have different sentence structures, and what sounds natural in Bengali often sounds wrong in English.

বেশিরভাগ ভুলের কারণ হলো বাংলা ব্যাকরণ সরাসরি ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ করা। ইংরেজির নিজস্ব গঠন আছে — সেটা বুঝলেই ভুলগুলো বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।

Mistake 1: Dropping Articles (a, an, the)

This is the #1 mistake. Bengali has no articles — so we forget them in English.

❌ "I am student." ❌ "She went to hospital." ❌ "He is best player in team."

✅ "I am a student." ✅ "She went to the hospital." ✅ "He is the best player in the team."

Quick rule — সহজ নিয়ম:

  • First mention of something = a / an → I saw a dog.
  • Same thing again, or specific = the → The dog was black.
  • Jobs and roles alone → a → She is a teacher.

বাংলায় "একটি" বা "টা/টি" ছাড়াও বাক্য চলে। ইংরেজিতে চলে না। সর্বনাম বাদে প্রতিটি noun-এর আগে a/an/the আছে কিনা চেক করো।

Mistake 2: Wrong Verb Tense After "Since" and "For"

❌ "I am living here since 2020." ❌ "She is working there for three years."

✅ "I have been living here since 2020." ✅ "She has been working there for three years."

Rule: Actions that started in the past and are still continuing → Present Perfect Continuous

"since" বা "for" দিয়ে এখনো চলছে এমন কাজ বোঝালে has/have been + verb-ing ব্যবহার করো।

Mistake 3: "Do" vs "Make"

Bengali has one word (করা) for both. English has two.

Use MAKE for:

  • Creating things: make tea, make a plan, make a mistake
  • Forcing: make someone do something

Use DO for:

  • Tasks and activities: do homework, do exercise, do the dishes
  • General actions: do a favour, do well

❌ "I did a mistake." ✅ "I made a mistake." ❌ "She made her homework." ✅ "She did her homework." ❌ "Can you do me a tea?" ✅ "Can you make me a tea?"

বাংলায় দুটোই "করা" — কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে তৈরি করা = make, কাজ করা = do।

Mistake 4: "I have" vs "I am having"

In Bengali, "আমার আছে" works for all situations. In English, have (possession) is not used in continuous form.

❌ "I am having a car." ❌ "She is having two sisters."

✅ "I have a car." ✅ "She has two sisters."

Exception: "having" IS correct when it means experiencing: ✅ "I am having a great time." (experiencing) ✅ "We are having dinner." (the activity)

possession বোঝাতে have কখনো -ing হয় না। তবে experience বোঝালে having চলে।

Mistake 5: Saying "Myself" When You Mean "I" or "Me"

This is very common in formal Bangladeshi English.

❌ "Myself Karim, I am from Dhaka." → (introductions) ❌ "Please contact myself for more information." ❌ "Myself and my colleague will attend."

✅ "I am Karim, from Dhaka." ✅ "Please contact me for more information." ✅ "My colleague and I will attend."

Correct use of myself: only when the subject and object are the same person. ✅ "I hurt myself." ✅ "I did it myself." (= without help)

"Myself Karim" শুনতে formal মনে হয় — কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে এটা ভুল। I am Karim বলো।

Mistake 6: Double Negatives

In Bengali, double negatives are natural. In English, they cancel each other out.

❌ "I don't know nothing about it." ❌ "She didn't go nowhere." ❌ "There isn't nobody here."

✅ "I don't know anything about it." ✅ "She didn't go anywhere." ✅ "There isn't anybody here."

Rule: After a negative verb (don't, didn't, isn't, can't), use: nothing → anything / nobody → anybody / nowhere → anywhere

বাংলায় "কিছুই না জানি না" ঠিক আছে। ইংরেজিতে দুটো negative একসাথে positive হয়ে যায়।

Mistake 7: "The" Before Country and City Names

❌ "I live in the Dhaka." ❌ "She is from the Bangladesh." ❌ "He studied in the London."

✅ "I live in Dhaka." ✅ "She is from Bangladesh." ✅ "He studied in London."

Exceptions — "the" IS used:

  • Countries with plural or "of" names: the United States, the United Kingdom, the Philippines
  • Rivers, seas, oceans: the Padma, the Indian Ocean

সাধারণ শহর বা দেশের নামের আগে "the" লাগে না। USA, UK-এর আগে লাগে কারণ নামে "States" বা "Kingdom" আছে।

Mistake 8: Word Order in Questions

Bengali questions often follow a different order than English.

❌ "You are going where?" ❌ "She said what?" ❌ "This means what?"

✅ "Where are you going?" ✅ "What did she say?" ✅ "What does this mean?"

Question word order: Question word → auxiliary verb → subject → main verb

বাংলায় প্রশ্ন-শব্দ শেষে আসে। ইংরেজিতে শুরুতে।

Mistake 9: Overusing "Good" and "Nice"

Not wrong — just weak. One word for everything sounds limited.

Instead of always saying good, try:

| Situation | Better word | |-----------|-------------| | Food | delicious, tasty, flavourful | | Work | excellent, outstanding, well done | | Idea | brilliant, great, solid | | Person | kind, generous, thoughtful | | Experience | wonderful, enjoyable, memorable |

"good" ভুল নয়, কিন্তু দুর্বল। নির্দিষ্ট শব্দ ব্যবহার করলে ইংরেজি তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে আরও শক্তিশালী শোনায়।

Mistake 10: "Open" and "Close" for Lights and Taps

This is a direct translation from Bengali (আলো খোলা/বন্ধ করা).

❌ "Open the light." ❌ "Close the fan." ❌ "Open the tap."

✅ "Turn on the light." ✅ "Turn off the fan." ✅ "Turn on the tap." / "Run the tap."

বাংলায় আলো "খোলা/বন্ধ" করা হয়। ইংরেজিতে turn on / turn off।

Your Action Plan — করণীয়

  1. Pick 2 mistakes from this list that you make most often
  2. Write 5 sentences using the correct form
  3. For one week, catch yourself every time you make those 2 mistakes

একসাথে সব ঠিক করতে যাবে না। সবচেয়ে বেশি যে ২টি ভুল করো, সেটা আগে ঠিক করো।
