The 12 Tenses — Simple Overview
১২টি Tense — সহজ সারসংক্ষেপ
English has 12 tenses. Bangla has far fewer — which is why tenses feel confusing at first. But there is a pattern: 3 times (past, present, future) × 4 aspects (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous).
ইংরেজিতে ১২টি tense আছে। বাংলায় অনেক কম — তাই প্রথমে tense বিভ্রান্তিকর মনে হয়। কিন্তু একটি pattern আছে।
Present Tenses — বর্তমান কাল
1. Present Simple — সাধারণ বর্তমান গঠন: Subject + V1 (+s/es) ব্যবহার: অভ্যাস, সাধারণ সত্য
- I drink tea every morning. (আমি প্রতিদিন সকালে চা খাই)
- The sun rises in the east.
2. Present Continuous — ঘটমান বর্তমান গঠন: am/is/are + V-ing ব্যবহার: এখন যা ঘটছে
- I am reading a book now. (আমি এখন একটি বই পড়ছি)
3. Present Perfect — পুরাঘটিত বর্তমান গঠন: have/has + V3 ব্যবহার: অতীতের কাজ যার প্রভাব এখনও আছে
- I have finished my homework. (আমি আমার হোমওয়ার্ক শেষ করেছি)
- ⚠️ বাংলায় এর সরাসরি সমতুল্য নেই — এটিই সবচেয়ে কঠিন tense বাংলাভাষীদের জন্য।
4. Present Perfect Continuous গঠন: have/has been + V-ing ব্যবহার: অতীতে শুরু, এখনও চলছে
- I have been studying for three hours. (আমি তিন ঘণ্টা ধরে পড়ছি)
Past Tenses — অতীত কাল
5. Past Simple — সাধারণ অতীত গঠন: Subject + V2
- I went to Dhaka yesterday. (আমি গতকাল ঢাকা গিয়েছিলাম)
6. Past Continuous — ঘটমান অতীত গঠন: was/were + V-ing
- I was sleeping when you called. (তুমি যখন ফোন করেছিলে আমি ঘুমাচ্ছিলাম)
7. Past Perfect — পুরাঘটিত অতীত গঠন: had + V3 ব্যবহার: অতীতের দুটি কাজের মধ্যে আগেরটি
- The train had left before I arrived. (আমি পৌঁছানোর আগেই ট্রেন চলে গিয়েছিল)
8. Past Perfect Continuous গঠন: had been + V-ing
- She had been waiting for an hour when the bus came.
Future Tenses — ভবিষ্যৎ কাল
9. Future Simple গঠন: will + V1
- I will call you tomorrow. (আমি আগামীকাল তোমাকে ফোন করব)
10. Future Continuous গঠন: will be + V-ing
- This time tomorrow, I will be flying to London.
11. Future Perfect গঠন: will have + V3
- By 2030, I will have completed my degree.
12. Future Perfect Continuous গঠন: will have been + V-ing
- By June, I will have been working here for five years.
The Three Most Important Tenses

For everyday conversation, master these three first:
- Present Simple — অভ্যাস ও সত্য
- Past Simple — অতীতের ঘটনা
- Present Perfect — অতীত থেকে বর্তমান সংযোগ
These three cover 80% of daily English. Learn them deeply before worrying about the rest.
Common Tense Mistakes by Bengali Speakers

Mistake 1: Present Simple instead of Present Continuous ❌ I go to market now. ✅ I am going to the market now. বাংলায় "আমি এখন বাজারে যাচ্ছি" — এই "যাচ্ছি" ইংরেজিতে am going, শুধু go নয়।
Mistake 2: Past Simple instead of Present Perfect ❌ I finished my homework. (যখন প্রভাব এখনও প্রাসঙ্গিক) ✅ I have finished my homework. (এখন আমি ফ্রি) সূত্র: নির্দিষ্ট সময় উল্লেখ থাকলে Past Simple (yesterday, last week), না থাকলে এবং বর্তমানের সাথে সংযোগ থাকলে Present Perfect।
Mistake 3: Will with time clauses ❌ When I will reach home, I will call you. ✅ When I reach home, I will call you. When/if/before/after-এর পরে ভবিষ্যতের অর্থেও present tense ব্যবহার হয়।
Mistake 4: Continuous with stative verbs ❌ I am knowing the answer. ✅ I know the answer. know, understand, believe, love, want, need — এই stative verbs সাধারণত continuous-এ ব্যবহার হয় না।

Certain words point to specific tenses. Learn these pairs and half your tense decisions become automatic:
Present Simple: always, usually, often, every day, sometimes, never Present Continuous: now, right now, at the moment, currently, Look! Listen! Present Perfect: just, already, yet, ever, never, since, for, recently, so far Past Simple: yesterday, last week, in 2020, ago, when I was young Past Continuous: while, when (+ interruption), at 8 pm yesterday Future Simple: tomorrow, next week, soon, I think, probably
Example: see "yet"? → Present Perfect. See "ago"? → Past Simple. See "Look!"? → Present Continuous.
