IELTS Preparation in Bengali — Complete Guide for Bangladeshi Candidates

IELTS-এর সম্পূর্ণ প্রস্তুতি গাইড বাংলায়। পরীক্ষার কাঠামো, ব্যান্ড স্কোর, প্রতিটি মডিউলের কৌশল এবং বাংলাদেশি পরীক্ষার্থীদের সাধারণ ভুল।

IELTS at a Glance

এক নজরে IELTS

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's most popular English proficiency test — required for study, work, and migration to the UK, Canada, Australia, and beyond.

Two versions:

  • Academic — for university admission
  • General Training — for migration and work

Four modules, one score each, averaged to your overall band:

| Module | Time | Format | |---|---|---| | Listening | 30 min | 40 questions, 4 recordings | | Reading | 60 min | 40 questions, 3 passages | | Writing | 60 min | 2 tasks | | Speaking | 11-14 min | Face-to-face interview |

চারটি মডিউল, প্রতিটির আলাদা স্কোর, গড় করে তোমার overall band।

Understanding Band Scores

Band Score বোঝা

  • Band 5.0-5.5 — Modest user. B1-B2 borderline. Not enough for most universities.
  • Band 6.0-6.5 — Competent user. Solid B2. The most common university requirement.
  • Band 7.0-7.5 — Good user. C1 territory. Required for top universities, medicine, nursing.
  • Band 8.0+ — Very good user. C1-C2.

The CEFR connection matters: if your English is genuinely B1, no amount of "IELTS tricks" produces a band 7. Test technique adds 0.5 band at most — the rest is real language level.

তোমার প্রকৃত ইংরেজি স্তরই মূল — কৌশল সর্বোচ্চ ০.৫ ব্যান্ড যোগ করে।

Module-by-Module Strategy

প্রতিটি মডিউলের কৌশল

Listening

  • The recording plays once only. Train with single-listen practice from day one.
  • Answers come in order for most question types — if you miss one, let it go and follow the audio.
  • Spelling counts: "Wendesday" is a wrong answer.
  • Bangladeshi-specific trap: British accents dominate. Train your ear with BBC content, not only American YouTube.

Reading

  • 60 minutes, 3 passages, no extra transfer time (unlike Listening).
  • Do not read the full passage first. Read questions, then scan for answers.
  • True/False/Not Given is the killer question type: "Not Given" means the text says nothing about it — not that it is false. Practise this distinction until it is automatic.
  • Budget: 15-17 minutes per passage, leaving buffer for the hardest one.

Writing

  • Task 1 (Academic): describe a graph/chart in 150+ words. Learn the language of trends: increased sharply, declined gradually, remained stable, peaked at.
  • Task 2: a 250+ word essay — worth double Task 1. If time runs short, protect Task 2.
  • Structure that works: Introduction (paraphrase question + your position) → 2 body paragraphs (one idea each, with example) → conclusion.
  • The template trap: examiners in Bangladesh see the same memorised introductions hundreds of times. Detected templates cap your score at band 5-6. Learn structures, not scripts.

Speaking

  • Part 1: everyday questions (home, work, hobbies). Part 2: 2-minute talk from a cue card. Part 3: abstract discussion.
  • Memorised answers are the #1 score killer. Examiners detect them instantly and steer you off-script.
  • Fluency beats vocabulary: a smooth answer with simple words outscores a halting answer with impressive words.
  • It is fine to say "That's an interesting question, let me think..." — natural hesitation devices are actually scored positively.

The 8-Week Preparation Plan

৮ সপ্তাহের প্রস্তুতি পরিকল্পনা

Weeks 1-2: Diagnosis + foundations

  • Take a full practice test under exam conditions. Find your baseline.
  • Identify your weakest module — it gets double time from now on.
  • Fix grammar gaps at B2 level: conditionals, passive, relative clauses, linking devices.

Weeks 3-5: Module skills

  • Daily: 30 min Listening practice + 1 Reading passage
  • Alternate days: 1 Writing task (get it corrected!) / 15 min Speaking practice recorded
  • Weekly: review error patterns — IELTS punishes repeated mistakes

Weeks 6-7: Full tests

  • 2 complete timed tests per week
  • Analyse every wrong answer: careless, technique, or language gap?

Week 8: Taper

  • Light review, no new material
  • One final Speaking simulation
  • Logistics: documents, test centre route, sleep

Common Mistakes by Bangladeshi Candidates

বাংলাদেশি পরীক্ষার্থীদের সাধারণ ভুল

  1. Preparing only with question banks — without fixing underlying grammar, you repeat the same band score test after test.
  2. Ignoring Speaking practice — reading about speaking is not speaking. Record yourself daily.
  3. Memorising essays — capped at band 6 when detected, and it is always detected.
  4. Booking the test too early — each attempt costs significant money. Take a full practice test first; if you are 1.5 bands below target, postpone.
  5. Neglecting time management — many candidates know the answers but run out of time. Every practice session must be timed.

A strong B2 foundation is what separates band 6 from band 7. EnglishSpark-এর B2 কোর্স বাংলা ব্যাখ্যা সহ সেই ভিত্তি তৈরি করে।
