La buena noticia: ya conoces esta lógica
El español distingue exactamente lo mismo:
- Trabajé ayer. → I worked yesterday. (Past Simple — acción terminada)
- Estaba trabajando cuando llamaste. → I was working when you called. (Past Continuous — en progreso)
Si dominas indefinido vs imperfecto progresivo en español, el 80% del trabajo está hecho. Solo falta la forma.
Past Simple — la foto terminada
Forma: verbo + -ed (regulares) o segunda columna (irregulares)
Usa Past Simple para:
1. Acciones completadas en un momento concreto:
- She arrived at 9. (llegó — hecho terminado)
- We watched a film last night.
2. Secuencias de acciones (una tras otra):
- I woke up, had breakfast and left for work.
3. Periodos cerrados:
- I lived in Madrid for five years. (ya no vivo allí)
Past Continuous — la película en marcha
Forma: was/were + verbo-ing
Usa Past Continuous para:
1. Acción en progreso en un momento del pasado:
- At 8pm, I was having dinner. (estaba cenando — en medio de la acción)
2. Acción de fondo interrumpida por otra:
- I was sleeping when the alarm went off.
3. Dos acciones largas simultáneas:
- While I was cooking, he was setting the table.
4. Ambientar una historia:
- The sun was shining and the birds were singing...
La combinación estrella: when y while
La estructura más examinada — acción larga + acción corta:
[Past Continuous] when [Past Simple]
- I was walking home when it started to rain.
While [Past Continuous], [Past Simple]
- While she was studying, someone knocked at the door.
Truco: when suele introducir la acción corta (Past Simple); while la larga (Past Continuous).
