The Root of the Problem
Корень проблемы
Russian has one past tense. English has several — and Present Perfect simply does not exist in Russian. This is why it feels so unnatural at first.
В русском языке одно прошедшее время. В английском их несколько — и Present Perfect просто не существует в русском. Именно поэтому поначалу оно кажется таким неестественным.
Past Simple — Прошедшее простое
Use Past Simple for completed actions at a specific time in the past.
Используй Past Simple для завершённых действий в конкретное время в прошлом.
| Use | Example | Перевод | |-----|---------|---------| | Specific time | I visited London in 2019. | Я посетил Лондон в 2019 году. | | Yesterday | She called me yesterday. | Она позвонила мне вчера. | | Last week | We finished the project last week. | Мы закончили проект на прошлой неделе. |
Signal words — Слова-сигналы
yesterday, last week/month/year, in 2019, ago, when I was young
The key: you know exactly when it happened.
Главное: ты знаешь точно, когда это произошло.
Present Perfect — Настоящее совершённое
Use Present Perfect when the time is not specified or when the result matters more than when it happened.
Используй Present Perfect, когда время не указано или когда результат важнее момента действия.
| Use | Example | Перевод | |-----|---------|---------| | Unspecified time | I have visited London. | Я был в Лондоне. (когда — неважно) | | Recent result | She has called me. | Она мне звонила. (результат важен) | | Still relevant | We have finished the project. | Мы закончили проект. (он готов сейчас) |
Signal words — Слова-сигналы
already, yet, just, ever, never, recently, since, for, so far, this week/month/year
The Classic Test
Ask yourself: does the time matter?
Спроси себя: важно ли время?
I lost my keys. — Past Simple. You might be telling a story.
I have lost my keys. — Present Perfect. The result matters RIGHT NOW — you cannot get into your house.
Side by Side — Сравнение
| Past Simple | Present Perfect | |-------------|-----------------| | I ate sushi yesterday. | I have eaten sushi. (in my life) | | She lived in Paris for 2 years. (she left) | She has lived in Paris for 2 years. (still there) | | Did you see that film? (specific time implied) | Have you seen that film? (ever in your life) |
Common Mistakes — Типичные ошибки

Wrong: Did you ever try sushi? Right: Have you ever tried sushi? (Ever = life experience = Present Perfect)
Wrong: I have bought this car in 2020. Right: I bought this car in 2020. (In 2020 = specific time = Past Simple)
