Per què els phrasal verbs són tan difícils
Un phrasal verb és un verb + partícula (up, out, on, off...) amb un significat que sovint no es pot deduir: give up no és "donar amunt" — és "rendir-se".
La bona notícia: no necessites els 5.000 phrasal verbs que existeixen. Amb els 25 més freqüents cobreixes la majoria de converses quotidianes.
Els 25 imprescindibles
Vida quotidiana:
- wake up — despertar-se → I wake up at 7.
- get up — llevar-se → I get up right after waking up.
- turn on / turn off — encendre / apagar → Turn off the lights.
- put on / take off — posar-se / treure's (roba) → Put on your jacket.
- go out — sortir → We're going out tonight.
Feina i estudis: 6. find out — descobrir, assabentar-se → I found out the truth. 7. give up — rendir-se, deixar → Don't give up! 8. carry on — continuar → Carry on with your work. 9. look up — buscar (informació) → Look it up in the dictionary. 10. hand in — lliurar → Hand in your homework. 11. set up — muntar, establir → She set up her own company. 12. come up with — tenir una idea → He came up with a brilliant plan.
Relacions: 13. get on with — portar-se bé → I get on well with my colleagues. 14. look after — cuidar → She looks after her grandmother. 15. break up — trencar (una relació) → They broke up last month. 16. make up — reconciliar-se / inventar → They made up after the argument. 17. let down — decebre → Don't let me down.
Moviment i viatges: 18. take off — enlairar-se → The plane takes off at 9. 19. check in / check out — registrar-se / marxar (hotel) → We checked in at noon. 20. pick up — recollir → I'll pick you up at the station. 21. drop off — deixar (algú en un lloc) → Drop me off at the corner.
Altres essencials: 22. run out of — quedar-se sense → We've run out of milk. 23. put off — ajornar → Don't put off until tomorrow... 24. turn up — aparèixer → He turned up late, as always. 25. work out — fer exercici / funcionar / resoldre → Everything worked out fine.
Tres trucs per aprendre'ls
1. Aprèn-los en context, mai en llistes aïllades. El cervell recorda històries, no taules.
2. Agrupa'ls per tema, no per partícula. Tots els de viatges junts, tots els de feina junts.
3. Escriu una frase pròpia amb cadascun. Una frase teva val més que deu exemples llegits.
Separables o inseparables: la regla que ho canvia tot
Els phrasal verbs es divideixen en dos grups amb comportament diferent:
Separables — l'objecte pot anar al mig:
- Turn off the light. = Turn the light off. ✓
- Amb pronom, SEMPRE al mig: Turn it off. ✓ / Turn off it. ✗
Inseparables — mai es divideixen:
- Look after the children. ✓ / Look the children after. ✗
- I get on with my colleagues. ✓
No hi ha regla lògica per saber quin és quin — es memoritzen amb l'ús. Però el 90% dels errors són amb pronoms: si el phrasal verb és separable i l'objecte és un pronom (it, them, him...), el pronom va obligatòriament al mig.
Phrasal verbs amb tres paraules
Alguns phrasal verbs porten dues partícules — i aquests són sempre inseparables:
- look forward to — esperar amb il·lusió → I'm looking forward to the weekend.
- get on with — portar-se bé / continuar → Get on with your work!
- run out of — quedar-se sense → We've run out of coffee.
- put up with — tolerar → I can't put up with this noise.
- come up with — idear → She came up with a great solution.
- look down on — menysprear → Don't look down on beginners.
- catch up with — posar-se al dia → I need to catch up with my emails.
Nota per a l'examen First: look forward to va seguit de gerundi — I look forward to hearing from you. És l'error més típic dels writings formals.
El pla de 30 dies per dominar-los
Setmana 1: els 10 de vida quotidiana. Escriu una rutina diària teva usant-los tots.
Setmana 2: els de feina i estudis. Redacta un email fictici amb 5 d'ells.
Setmana 3: relacions i moviment. Explica (per escrit o en veu alta) la trama d'una sèrie usant-ne 6.
Setmana 4: repàs actiu. Tapa la columna de significats i posa't a prova. Els que falles, targeta de repàs.
